Small Businesses Making a BIG Impact

“Community” is a loaded term that means something a little different to all of us. Whether it’s the friends you make volunteering at your local animal shelter, or the neighbours who help shovel your driveway after a massive snow storm, we all need community.  At Sunly, we value our community and are always excited for an opportunity to give back. That’s why this month, along with our partners over at CFCY, we’ve selected ten local businesses we want to give a little extra love to.

Now I know times are tough, and a lot of us have a hard enough time affording the essentials, but you can support local without spending money. Google reviews go a LONG way for companies, it’s essentially free advertising for them. Positive reviews can make all the difference, so if you can spare a few minutes of your time, you can still support local!

While we wish we could highlight all the amazing people and businesses on PEI, here are a few wonderful entrepreneurs you should definitely check out, or leave some love on their review pages to help them continue their growth!

Borrowed Kitchen

The Borrowed Kitchen has been providing delicious baked goods for over ten years on PEI! What started as a hobby eventually became much more when Dianne decided to share her passion for baking to the world. Now a local favourite, her baked goods bring joy to those all over the island! Next time you’re heading East from town, swing by and pick up one of Dianne’s famous pies! In the meantime, check out their website.

Courtside Sneakers

Whether you’re shooting hoops on the court, or you just enjoy looking stylish, Courtside Sneakers is worth the stop! Located right on Queen St, this boutique is filled with apparel from some of the most popular brands, including Nike, New Balance and Air Jordan. If you’re a sneakerhead, or just looking for new kicks, check out Courtside Sneakers! If you want a peak at what’s on their shelves first, follow this link to their website.

From the Hive

As the name suggests, From the Hive sells a wide range of soaps and skin care products, all made with honey. Not only do they make their products  by hand, but they even raise their own honey bees! They’re making our human lives nicer with these organic products while helping out our fuzzy bumbling friends! With a deep passion for the environment, and respect for all the bees provide us with, From the Hive is a business you can feel wonderful about supporting. Buzz over to their website here, or check them out in person - no beekeeping suit required!

Gallant and Co.

From baked goods to seafood, Gallant & Co is the perfect place for a lunch date or coffee stop.  Selling fresh made biscuits, soups, and so much more, whether you need a quick snack or a full meal, Gallant & Co is the place to go.

PS in case you weren’t already sold, they have a bacon grilled cheese sandwich... enough said. Take a look at their menu here.

Sherwood Timber Mart

Whether you’re doing a home reno, or needing a little retail therapy, Sherwood Timber Mart always has a smiling staff member available to help you find what you need. Instead of going to one of the retail giants next time you need home improvement supplies, come support your local Sherwood Timber Mart! Warning: you may leave with more than you intended to buy… who can turn down a cute garden gnome at the right price when they see one!?

Check out their website here.

The Boys Comfort Cuisine

Who doesn’t love home cooked meals? For most of us, the time and energy to make them isn’t always available. Thankfully, you can enjoy all that home cooked goodness without any of the effort with The Boys Comfort Cuisine! Lasagna, fresh soups, pies… so many delicious options! Next time you want a delicious hearty meal without the hard part, or if you just need another jar of their signature meat sauce, head to The Boys Comfort Cuisine to get your fill! The Spice Store

Another local gem, The Spice Store offers a taste of India nestled right into Charlottetown. Ramila opened The Spice Store in 2017, with a goal of bringing more diverse food selections to PEI. Offering a variety of Indian and Desi products, The Spice Shop might just become your new go-to. Check out their Facebook, and stay tuned for their Diwali specials happening in November!

Two Beggars

Doggy Drive Through… Need I say more!? Two Beggars is the cutest pet store complete with a “drive through” window for the pups walking by outside. Take your furbaby by and test it out for yourself! With their hand made doggy apparel, and a variety of other pet accessories, Two Beggars is a must-visit for any pet owner.

Spot on Dog Training

If you wish you could take your dog to a store like Two Beggars, but they’re always reactive or uncontrollable, Spot On Dog Training is for you! Shannon has a lengthy list of qualifications (I was going to list a few here, but we’d use up the whole paragraph just on her credentials!), so you can feel confident you’re going with the pros. Need an extra confidence boost? Spot On has been selected as a finalist for the Chamber of Commerce President's Excellence Award for Emerging Business Excellence! Congratulations to Shannon and her team! If you’re ready to turn your pups into star pupils, click here.

Our community is what gives us our motivation, and inspires us to make this a better, greener, place for all.

We are grateful every day for the amazing locals we have here on PEI, and for the other businesses here that improve our lives. From the unique and delicious fresh made meals we have thanks to Gallant & Co, The Borrowed Kitchen, and The Boys Comfort Cuisine, to our flashy new kicks from Courtside Sneakers, we’re thankful for all the good and joy these local businesses bring. With tough times and fierce competition, it’s never been more important to support local, and uplift those in our community. Thank you all for making PEI such a wonderful community we are proud to call home!

We will continue our commitment to bringing a little more sunshine to our community thanks to your help!
